Merry Wives Cafe brings flavor to polygamist town

How about this: a new sit-down cafe in the twin towns. Anyone tried it?

The above title is a Deseret News link. Here's another one (same subject) in Brooke Adams' Tribune blog dated March 27th.

Hey, Atari, if you make that trip, give the Merry Wives a try and tell us what you think.

Difficult to think of anything to
say regarding this development.
I'm happy for those who choose to
eat there. Maybe just wish the new
business well & request the following
on the menu:

Fried green tomatoes
German style potato salad
Stuffed bell peppers
Wild onions dish
Navajo frybread
Plum pudding

I'm eccentric in the food dept.

Well, not only in the food dept.
There is that matter of my marriage
beliefs, as well as my own personal
relationships down through the sands of time...

Yum yummmm! ... those are wonderful requests, Anon. You sound like my kind of guy/gal!

I would add:
¤ Homemade Sauerkraut
¤ Bread Pudding w/Rum-flavored Hard Sauce
(I can't find it anywhere (OR make it) as good as I had as a kid - no raisins)

I hope the business does well, too.

rum flavored? does that mean it does not contain REAL RUM??

just curious

feralfem said...

Heck yes! Gotta be REAL RUM!!

I'm not an artificial gal! ::grin::

Yes, I've eaten there. It sports an upscale decor and plasma(?) screen tv's so you can watch sports or whatever while you are eating. The food is fabulous.

I think the name is sort of a joke. It doesn't really have to mean anything about polygamy, but many people (self-consciously) draw that conclusion.

For those for whom diet is a cuss
word:

Meatloaf and scallop potatoes
Strawberry/rubarb pie

My sister says it is really good. She went back and they had closed down the cafe to a private party with no notice to serve John Timpson and co.

I am glad there is a cafe there. I hope the buisness does well. With the way things out there seem to be going, I have hopes it will. I wish the owners the best of luck. :)
I want to go out there and see it for myself. It sounds nice. Kinda sports bar/hometown cafe style, from what I have seen and heard.
I miss the Mark Twain, thought. The way it used to be with the polished wood and red velvet and candles.

The food is AWESOME! A little pricey but I think it's worth it considering you can't find another place in town thats CLEAN and has CUSTOMER SERVICE. Geeez, customer service in the Twin Cities, what a concept.

You're right 2:56 anon but that's just indicative that it's not run by the FLDS but by the Centennial People. I live in Apple Valley and have eaten there once and it wasn't a surprise. The people of Centennial Park are just a different breed than the FLDS people. Cleaner, smarter, nicer, and more cordial. Not to mention much better looking.

ATAR_i said...

??? cleaner, smarter, nicer, more cordial, better looking???

I get the cordial and nicer one (because warrens FLDS have a more of an 'us/them' view of the community) but the other descriptors???

Was that just bait for a rousing conversation?

The Cenntenial Park people are exactly the same Breed as the FLDS.they just dont have the laziness, paranoia, fraud, that has been brainwashed into the FLDS,for the last 2 decades.Cenntenial Park only split off in 1984,All are blood relatives to the FLDS.

I don't normally ask folks who
serve up good food or provide
fine service what religious
sect they belong to. It seems
rather judgmental to me. What,
you won't leave a tip if they
are FLDS? Bad show in any case.

PS: Chicken and 'slickers'
Hot spinach salad

Hey 4:16 and 4:39 anon,Warren Jeffs and John Timpson are cousins.

I suppose you can justify the paranoia and the fraud, but laziness!?? Have you seen what has occurred in Texas, Nevada and South Dakota?

Maybe they aren't ALL blood relatives, but they ARE cut from the same cloth.

I have a question for anyone, did the FLDS group use to accept converts in the past, and if so when did the practise stop.?Does the Cenntenial Park
group accept converts?

Anonymous said...

Totally off the subject, but since the term 'converts' has just been mentioned, are there
any amongst you that previously were part of
the Church of the Firstborn of the Fulness of Times? Shades of Colonia LeBaron? Followers
of Brother Joel? I'm dating myself, but often
memories of those exciting (and sad) days return...

The practice of accepting converts among the FLDS seemed to wither away towards the end up Bro. Rulon Jeffs administration. Now they're so secretive and exclusive that I don't think it ever happens.

The Centennial Park group doesn't have a missionary systen that goes out and proselytes but they are always open to people who show interest. They probably have about ten converts a year, most from the LDS church.

anon 11:29,converts were accepted in the old days, and even encouraged. there are two logical reasons why the practice was in essence, discontinued.
after the 53 raid on short creek, the media had portrayed the fundamentalists as having been the helpless victims of cruel government persecution. there was a considerable amount of public sympathy for us. well all the somewhat positive press attracted all the kooks in the world,(figuratively speaking.they all wanted seven wives and the authority to set the work in order. the other reason was, the vast majority of prospective converts for some strange reason, just happened to be men. however, if you are an attractive female,or a man with one or more attractive daughters, and don't have visions of yourself as the messiah, you may still be acceptable. oh yes, money, preferably in considerable quantity, .... is a good thing.

Uncaduff,Why is there so much differance in the various fundamentalist groups that trace themselves back to Lorin Wooley. For example the Cenntenial Group is much differant than the Flds,Allred Group has many differances from both,Yet all were part of the same congregation prior to the 1950's.

Anonymous said...

Why are you asking duffer? Next thing you know he will start thinking he has a following.

*just kidding.

Anonymous said...

anon. 4:08,the simple answer is,(and I believe time will verify),all the different versions reflect the beliefs of the people who started them.

6:04.....I have a following, but it aint got nuthn ta do with religion.

Haha, I love these little comments that are used to spur arguments and conversation. It is obviously a very large brush stroke being used here, hope you don't fall for the trap.

I think the main reason there is so much difference between the groups is that when you are in "gods only preisthood group" and there becomes a rif between two or more of the Alpha males, then a split accours. The congration has to decide which group to join, so you see the leaders looking for reasons to slander there compition and they purpusly head down different road as far as dress, doctrine, customs, etc.

Perhaps not appropriate for this topic, but I have a question. What ever happened to Laurene Jessop?

Anonymous said...

a few posters on the stop polygabuse board said that Laurene, Val and children moved out of the house they were living in, and are living happily outside of the CC/Hildale area. They didn't say where.

I hope that's true. I can't help but worry about her and her children, especially her girls.

Anyone here know anything else?

Anonymous said...

I think some one said they were in phoenix area.I dont think that you need to worry about her girls,Val is permamently "OUT".

Anonymous said...

I have heard that she, Val and the kids were hiding out in Colorado. Afraid of someone after them.

Anonymous said...

VAl may be weird and radical, but there is one thing I know to be true about him. He is an AWESOME dad to his kids, and completely adores them. I KNOW he would never hurt them. He would choose them over Warren any day.

Anonymous said...

But Val IS punishing Laurene for what she did, no doubt about that.
If she knew what he is really doing, Val would be history.

ATAR_i said...

If she knew what he is really doing, Val would be history.

What does that mean?

Anonymous said...

Ya, Flora. What the heck do you REALY know about it? How do you KNOW he is punishing her? And HOW exactly is he punishing her?

Anonymous said...

By filling her with lies and isolating her. Maybe this life style is what she wants, if so, leave her alone.

ATAR_i said...

Laurene is a big girl, but even big girls need someone to advocate for them sometimes. I think concern is appropriate - Laurene did make accusations that raised that concern.

I hope that she is happy, I hope that she is safe and healthy. It has been my experience that good intentions, and an understanding of behaviors to avoid is not always enough to keep a situation from deteriorating. I hope they are getting some sort of outside help - to walk them through a change.

Anonymous said...

I hope she is happy and safe too. Hopefully she is aware of all options open to her, but she has made a choice and that is to be respected. Only she can decide what is right or wrong, no one can decide this for her.

Anonymous said...

If Val had paid the rent and not made up a baloney story to protect his pride, everything would be ok.

bbgae said...

Well, I am heading ove to the cafe first chance I get.....wonder who I will see when I get there?

bbgae said...

I meant over. :)

Anonymous said...

I see all these postings about Laurene and Val, all I can say is Forget About Her. She has let so many women down by setting a bad example and giving up her freedom. She went right back to abuse, leave her there.

bbgae said...

Well, I drove through town, but ended up not having enough time to stop by the cafe.

Nice plug for the cafe on MSN Video today.
