Native Texan

What is the average level of education for the women in the UT, AZ, and TX FLDS groups? How about the men?

The average level of education would be deceptive, as the combination of homeschooling, private schooling, and apprenticeships don't translate directly into what we normally think of as a "level of education".

In general, they read and write as well as your average American citizens, have their share of doctors, nurses, engineers, and architects, and have the math needed to be successful in the building trades or other work.

You won't find that they are well-versed in multiculturalism, literature, geography, or other disciplines that do not relate to their lives.

Many are finished with their formal education in their early teens, but continue to learn through apprenticeships or life experiences.

If it weren't for the false doctrines and tyranny of their leaders, they could be as charming as the Pennsylvania Dutch. Many people have a yearning for simpler times, and the rural lifestyle is appealing. The sense of community that existed until recently also has its charms.

I hope that helps.

We hear that Jeffs will not allow children to be educated beyond grade school and most of his followers are functionally illiterate. No internet, or TV or radio. No contact with outside world.

Basically the same mentality that the Catholic Church had in medieval times.

It is another form of total control.

Is this true? Is this what seperates him from Utah or AZ? Where is the child welfare services of Texas?

All of those professions that you talked about are the result of the thinking of the pre-Warren administrations, and mostly the administration of Pres. Johnson. By the mid nineties Pres. Jeffs stopped the flow of post secondary education citing that there would be no time to finish anything started. Warren Jeffs was responsible for nothing in the post secondary field. "There is just no time left". Those folks can just be thankful that they once had someone with some real vision.

For being functionally illiterate and not allowed to use the internet there would seem to be quite a few warrenites that post on this site.

I bet they are not under Jeff's thumb if they use the internet --

Might even read that Warren is a madman and bankrupting the FLDS.

That would be really counter productive!!

My observation is that there are those that are very well educated and those that recieve a basic education like reading, writing and arithmatic but as they posted earlier, go into a skilled profession like construction, stone mason etc. Church Doctrine is a very big part of their education process. And as far as the child welfare in Texas, there has to be reasonable cause or a complaint that there is child abuse, neglect etc going on before they can investigate. Texas home school is not well governed, in fact once they sign up for a home school curriculum there is little or no follow up after that unless the child enters a public school or goes on to college.Texas Legislation in entering a new bill that will address home schooling.

The towns of Colorado City and Hildale, were doing great about 10 years ago. Then this Warren guy showed up and everything started to change. I know many older people that were told to get their education by President Johnson. Some have used their education to bless many. Some have taught others. Some worked hard to bring honest industry to town. Now, all the older men are being undone by Warren and the younger generation is getting very little education and much oppression at the hand of Warren. Really now, where did the Jeffs guy come from.

Warren only allows the elite of the elite that want to continue their education to go to college, and only if it's in the medical field. If you are not in good standing with him, you will not be allowed to go. I have a younger brother still there that is a straight A student at one of Warren's schools, but just because he doesn't agree with having to obey with every little stupid rule that is in the "priesthood" curriculum at the school, he was kicked out of school and told to not come back until he had repented and can "succomb" to Warrens every wish. I'm hoping that when he is old enough to make his own decisions, and moves in with me here in st. george, I can encourage him to continue his education where he can use his full potential.

Warren Jeffs is a pretty Decent Guy. I think the saying is right a lie (flora) will go through a community (Eldorado) before truth will get its boots on. That town their making is pretty cool. Even my friends wonder why everybody sounds mad at him. I bet if the truth was known about flora (stripper) those boots would fit.

He is using trust money for his own personal Utopia.

Since when is bankrupting the Communities of Hillsdale and Short Creek decent?

Tell the people of these communities how decent he was when the banks declare the trust fund of both cities insolvent.

Someone mentioned "functionally illeterate". I am sure that there are some there, as in other places. But they can read and write. They are "culturally illiterate", and have a hard time keeping their end of an intelligent conversation in the modern world.

But they consider that to be a blessing. If pressed, I would probably have to agree.

When did "shelter" become a bad word amd "tolerate" become the greatest virtue?

Regarding Education:

The more educated, self reliant and independent thinkers of the Twin City's refused to buy into the cult mentality of ignorance.

They started their own community (Centennial Park) south of the Twin City's nearly twenty years ago and rebuilt the Colorado City Academy, a private academy with a long history (43 years) of educational excellence.

They recently built (with their own funds) and chartered the Masada Charter School, a model of the latest concept's in elematary education, and they continue to promote education as one of the highest ideals of their culture.

The community of Centennial Park is an example of Mormon Fundamentalism that works in tandem with governmental agency's to address areas of education and social need. Their philosophy is, "Communication is the roadmap to understanding and peaceful coexistence." Government agency's regularly visit the community and update committees on beneficial programs.

They have no policy of welfare abuse, in fact, studies have shown Centennial Park to be below County and State averages in welfare use, and above County and State averages in educational performance.

Unfortunately, the sensationalist press prefers to print the dysfunctional workings of a madman rather than the industious efforts of a hard working polygamist community.

Please don't confuse the FLDS Church with the Priesthood Work in Centennial Park.

To Anon 1:26,
Well spoken, there are many others elsewhere that practice the same as you believe, they are not FLDS either. From the fruits brought forth by Warren and his fairly new FLDS church, the FLDS does not seem to be any part of the Priesthood Work any more. For the Priesthood Work has its early roots in keeping marriages together when they were being broke apart over 100 years ago. My thanks to all those who work hard to preserve their marriages and those of their fellow men. For those who do this know that it takes commpassion, forgiveness, charity, love, hope, mercy, repentance and the determination to strive to do a little better each day. Warren seems to have removed all of these attributes from his new church. If you can't get all your sins gone by tomorrow, Warren will strip you.

AS FAR AS I CAN TELL THE EDUCATION OF THESE PEOPLE IS FAR OUTSTANDING. IF YOU CAN SAY WE ONLY HAD AN EIGHT GRADE EDUCATION AND WE CAN BUILD LIKE WE DO, SEEMS TO GIVE WARREN CREDIT FOR SOMETHING. iT IS ONLY THE ONE'S OUT OF HIS CHURCH COMPLAINING. HE TOUGHT TO BE HONEST. THIS IS GOOD ADVICE. I SAY BE HONEST. THAT IS GOOD ADVICE. HOW COULD SUCH STUPID UNDEREDUCATED PEOPLE BE SO SMART AS TO BUILD A CITY IN A YEAR. EVEN THE SO CALLED 'LOST BOY'S' ARE INTELIGENT. INTELIGENT TO GET A JOB AND DO SOMETHING GOOD WITH THEIR LIFE. IF YOU DO NOT WORSHIP AS WE DO THAT IS YOUR RIGHT. SO BE IT. WE HAVE THAT SAME RIGHT TOO. LETS BE AMERICAN. UNLESS AMERICAN IS TO LIE. I SAY THEN LETS BE HONEST. I LOVE WARREN JEFFS. HE SAVED MY LIFE.

OK 11:21,

Here's the deal. Your group is often attacked for following a leader blindly (and mindlessly?). Being able to present a firm and intelligent argument would speak volumes to those of us who doubt that you can think for yourselves. It would give the impression that following Warren Jeffs is an intelligent decision, made by a group of thinking people.

Instead, those of us who don't follow Warren try to understand the situation better by coming to this blog. What I see are many (not all) who cannot speak or write intelligently whatsoever. I can hardly navigate through some of the spelling I'm seeing here.

What is the benefit of a proper education? First of all, it teaches us to think. Secondly, being challenged and completing a challenge develops character.

Is education the only thing that matters in this world? Of course not. Honesty is also important. Why not be both an honest and educated society? We live in America (I do fly my flag daily) where education is available to every child through 12th grade. Why not aspire to develop a group of fine young people, educated and equipped to defend their faith to the outside if necessary? Who knows, you could even convert a few followers.

Now I'm just talking crazy.

Aw, come on, jb, take it easy on these guys. It's not that they can't spell.

They would be happy to express themselves intelligently if they didn't have to look over their shoulder while using a computer. With pressure like that going on, who has time to spell correctly? I'm suprised we don't see more studdering.

To Anon 11:21,
It is true that the speed of which things have been built in Texas is incredible. The sad thing is the huge amount of money they have spent out there, when you have access to large amounts of money you can get anything. It is making the most of the money, money that has been hard earned and stripped from the members, that shows real leadership. I could have built 2 times as much in Colorado City. Uncle Fred could have built 5 times as much. So far they have build almost a dozen houses in Texas. With the money they have spent in Texas and Colorado, people like Uncle Fred and Winston could have blessed many thousands of people in Colorado City and not put them in the financial stress they are in. I think that Warren should only get the 10 percent tithing budget like other great men in the past got. Let's see how well he can do with that.

Has anyone else recognized the spirit of distress and anxiety in the messages of Warren's devout members that post on this site? I find it rather interesting that they all seem so aggravated, and trying to prove that they are right when it sounds like they are doubting their own words as they are written!

You'd have to be blind NOT to notice!

I follow Warren Jeffs and all I can say is that TRUTH CARRIES ITS ON DEFENSE. Answer them nothing.

Anonymous said...

To 2:21
Do you even have the capacity for original thought? Try thinking for yourself instead of regurgitating what you've heard in Warren's tapes. The man is a lunatic.
By the way, if you want to answer them nothing, why do you feel compelled to answer?
Strange. Very strange.

Ina society where every individual has a voice, the ability to persuade others represents power. But the health of that societly depends, in turn on every individual's taking on the responsibility of analyzing and evaluating the opinions of others. In a dictatorship or monarchy such matters are unimportant since the ordinary citizen has no voice, but the democracy that has an ignorant or uncaring citizenry will fail to be a true democracy. Citizens who are unable or unwilling to listen to and analyze the political speedes and the campaign rhetoric and who are unable or unwilling to express their opinions to their representatives will finally destroy that democracy by allowing other factions to take over their power through default.
These people do not have freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom to choose how to dress or who to marry. They may only read church censored literature. Even the elementary school aged children learn to read from reader that,"Father runner a big machine,he works very hard to keep sweet." "We love the prophet and try to keep sweet at home helping mom."

There is only one doctor, the other is attending his holiness at YFZ.We would not him to suffer, would we? One dentist in the past 50 years, which lawyer? one pediatric nurse clinician, Scientists? medstudent? - where are they? someones imagination? Yes many professor of the higher order- BullShit.

The whole social structure? Give me a break! Nothing in place for young people, not sports, no form of entertainment. There is also no social skills taught, no drug, pervention no sex education.

These young people have nothing to keep them interested in there life and religion, they rebel they are given the boot with no education or skills to live in the real world

Sientist do exist and are very real, med students too. Unfortunately they have been given the boot, or choose to leave. Some very briliant minds here, just stunted in growth.
